3/4th Scale Replica Bell P-39 Airacobra

Diesel Electric drive works well for locomotives where it functions as a CVT and weight is good for adhesion. A drive shaft is 99+% efficient and a carbon one is light and about $1000; a hybrid electric drive would be less efficient, likely heavier and much more expensive.

    Lighweight opposite 2-stroke engines

Two things that show the limited thinking of that statement are supercharging and prop reduction gearing which have been used on aviation engines for about one hundred years. A ~500cc flat twin would make more sense than a big single with a balance shaft. A two stroke single with balance shaft...

    Variations on Arup planform?

Hi back in the 1970s I owned an Arup S2 replica (I did not build it.) I spoke to Milt Hatfield, one of the Arup's original pilots on the phone. Milt built an ultralight version with a simplified planform with straight edges. I think he called it "The Little Bird". If you search sport Aviation...

A good common engine to convert?

60 degree V-6s do not need balance shafts; some 90 degree V-6 engines do make use of counter balance shafts.

A good common engine to convert?

There are flat Subarus flying in that power range. Porsches are too expensive to consider. A flat 4 has better inherent balance than an inline 4. The Suzuki G13BB is an excellent choice for a 100 hp conversion and gearboxes are available from at least two sources. Generalizations are not useful...
