Cut down case - flywheel drive?

Pops, thanks for the pics. Very interesting. So you've cut down the top of the case at the flywheel basically to save weight? possibly also to fit the cowling? Any tricks to cutting the case? I've heard magnesium does nasty things if it gets too hot!

Cut down case - flywheel drive?

Dan, thanks. Yes I remember in an earlier post you mentioned putting your mag and possibly an alternator on the pulley end. Are you intending a starter on the flywheel? Any chance you might post a pic of your cut down case?

Cut down case - flywheel drive?

Yes, I’m hoping Gary King can supply one. Essentially, Walter described it as squared off nearly down to the seam above the bolt holes.

Cut down case - flywheel drive?

I just picked up my GPAS 2180 flywheel drive kit which I bought from Walter Turk in Shertz, TX. Several years ago Walter, who knew Bruce King, was building a BK1.3 when Bruce decided not to fly anymore for health reasons. Walter bought Bruce’s completed BK1.3. This left him with a partially...

    CHT & Oil Temp Sensors

I have committed to buy a GPAS 2180 flywheel-end conversion kit from a builder whose poor health stopped his project. My plan is to add external full flow oil filtration and cooling. Where should I tap holes for the CHT and oil temp probes, and what size? Hoover recommended that the CHT probe...

Steps to scratch build a VW

Another teenage VW disaster: I was away at college, another sister, in highschool, threw a party in our parents' house when they were away. The huge crowd quickly ran out of beer. One of her friends hopped in my bug and headed out to buy more beer. When he returned, he parked by the house, which...

Steps to scratch build a VW

As I did, several. Never paid more than $350 for one, except a camper (I think $1,100). In 1972, when we graduated from high school, two of us drove from NY to CA with surfboards on the top, and lived in it that summer, showering in the public showers on the beach, but only when absolutely...

Steps to scratch build a VW

The original version of the Muir book is a collector's item, with all of the fabulous stoner iconography. Sadly, Corporate seems to have gotten involved over the years and toned it way down. Useful (although Bob Hoover rails against it), but not nearly as fun now.

Current state of Great Plains Aircraft?

I called three times over the course of a week, never spoke to a human, left a message each time, never got a call back. I give up.

    Rotor hub for pulley end

Ok, got it. I'm thinking Leburg ignition. Not sure I can fit a starter under the cowl at the front (flywheel) end, and I understand that for hand propping, particularly, the Leburg electronic ignition affords a much "softer" start.

    Rotor hub for pulley end

Pops, You recommend the JD alternator presumably because it delivers its 20 amps at (relatively) low rpms? I was hoping to avoid pulleys and belts, but this should be simple to install at the pulley end? (Hard to argue with pulleys where pulleys were designed to be). Sorry if these are dumb...
