That looks like it was made for an industrial engine. Not an aircraft.

Yamaha 160 lb engine. 130 hp

The 4 cylinders are rated, stock, at 140hp for the RX-1 and 160 or 165hp for the Apex. Installed weight, that is everything, exhaust, radiator, etc is about 180 lbs. A turboed Apex will put out a very conservative 200 hp and installed weight is 200 lbs.

    Intake Manifolds

I have now flown the airplane twice with the intakes modified as shown here. I gained over 100 RPM in the climb at 80 MPH. Unfortunately, I made several other changes so I don't know how much of the improvement I can credit to the change in the intake manifold. The airplane was down because...

Yamaha 160 lb engine. 130 hp

I believe that depends on what engine you are talking about. There aren't any high time conversions yet. I don't think anybody has worn one out. Evidence so far indicates that the valves might need to be adjusted at 500 hours on a stock 4 cylinder engine. Some of these have run over 20,000...

Yamaha 160 lb engine. 130 hp

It sounds like basically the same engine as the 3 cylinder snowmobile engine. The people who have worked with these engines prefer the snowmobile engines because it is easier to mount a PSRU on them. The 3 cylinder engines have worse TV issues than the 4 cylinder engines like the RX-1 and...

    Beauty

Or a radial! There was a Red one with maybe black stripes and a radial based at Agua Dulce a few years ago. Pure sex! I don't know if it is still there. But if you are really stuck on the Ranger, here you go: 1942 Ranger Aircraft Engines - aviation - by owner - airplane...

What did you do on your airplane project today?

It was a beautiful morning to fly the Thatcher. I took off at 6:30 AM and landed about 8:00 AM. Density altitude was a mere 6,300' at takeoff and winds were light. The engine ran better than it ever has. I gained around 100 RPM in the climb over what it used to run. I had done some valve...

VB is right. Paint just adds weight!

SSSC-2 Higher AR and less drag for better soaring ( mini-powered sailplane)

You must have some trick up your sleeve to expect the same weight with more wing area! I would go with a higher aspect ratio, carbon spar and ditch the strut. If you can do that, sign me up.

What did you do on your airplane project today?

I finished buttoning up the Thatcher this morning. I could have flown it. The wind died to almost nothing about the time I got done and it was not to hot. AWOS reported density altitude on the field of 8000'. I was tired and decided to fly it early tomorrow.

What did you do on your airplane project today?

No danger of flying it today! I didn't have all the screws and I had to finish fitting a new part I made. I might be able to fly it tomorrow if I get the rest of it together early enough. If it takes to long I will wait 'til Thursday morning to fly it. I don't want to make a test flight when...

    Merlin GT?

There is a Merlin GT project for sale in my area. I have never laid eyes on one and it's about 400 miles from me so it isn't convenient to go look at it. I have a long torso and I don't have enough headroom in most homebuilts and I end up looking at the wingroots even if I don't hit my head...

What did you do on your airplane project today?

I got my condition inspection signed off this morning. I started putting covers and fairings back but it got to hot to be any fun so I will finish early tomorrow morning.

Scrappy’s Landing Gear Wings - Yay or Nay?

Pops, and I for that matter, come from a different culture. It is a culture that faded out with urbanization and the wealth that has grown with industrialization. Your great grandfather's and earlier generations probably were a lot like Pops. It probably has a lot to do with growing up poor...
