I made a plug for a fuel tank mold (tanks to be fitted into the wingroots ahead of the spars) from the usual asssorment of plywood, foam, fillers, painted it, waxed it about half a dozen coats. Looked clean and smooth and shiny and felt slick to the touch. Painted one thick coat of vinylester resin onto the surface. It kept fish-eyeing. I just persisted brushing until the resin got a little tacky and it seemed to cover, then laid up two layers of chopped mat.

Problem 1 was the usual, damned thing was almost impossible to remove form the plug. Ok, not enough waxing I gues. Got it off eventually.

Problem 2 is a million pinholes. Sizable pinholes, some around 1mm in dia. Craters in fact.

Now this is the first time I used vinylester resin. Should I have used some kind of gelcoat first? What kind?

Any ideas?
