Today I needed a second hand to help with a couple of small jobs and didn't have anyone around. Turned to one of my favorite shop tools for holding the other end of a long part:

These are the old 'pop' type lab stools, just like the ones in my high school Chem lab. Got them at a local auction so they might actually be the same stools?
Nice thing about these is that the height is infinitely adjustable. Not high enough? Just grab whatever is handy to put the adjustment in range.
Someday I'll weld on a roller to one of these.
