    Fluting Tool - Homemade

    Hey Guys,
I wanted a fluting tool... I went to Home depot..

But all they had was a MONSTER... and $20 bucks for it...

I wanted a single type tool... So I figured it would be easy to make...

I've seen ones made from expensive pliers... Didn't make sense...
    .
I found a old tool in the drawer... Looked like it would work...
    .
I found some kind of pruner or cutter of some sort...

I tried to modify the tool ...

    But it needed more.....
    .
    .
So I needed to make the bottom jaw wider...

    This is 5/16" chromemoly (.058 )

    .

    .

    .

    .
The lower jaw needed more support... I added a screw
    .

    .
The upper jaw isn't sharp... I slightly rounded it...
    ;

    .
    .
This isn't the greatest tool....But it's what I had laying around

    I don't need it "much" ,

It'll do the job... The Stringer Material is curving good...
    .

    Crazzzy,
I like seeing someone make something from inginuity and need. Necessity is the mother of invention. Good Job!

As a former airframe inspector, I would strongly attempt to dissuade you from installing that part. The tool-marks and bend radius are very bad stress risers. You need to increase the radius of your bend by further modifying the jaws, and polish the Jaw surfaces so they don't scratch the work-piece.

    Hey Crazzzy,
    Take a look at these.

Aircraft Tool Supply | HAND FLUTING PLIERS | 7070

I bought a pair of these and they work great. They used round rod so they don't leave the marks that tinbender is refering to. I still like the fact that you made a tool that does work!

I agree. That is a design you can copy yourself since you obviously have the welding down pat. More simple to fabricate then what you have now. You dont need to use vice-grips. An el-cheapo set of slip-joint pliers that you have lying around would work equally well for that small gauge.

    Crazzzy,
You now have a cheering section. I want you to make those, then come back here and show those who only talk what happens when you let your hands do your talking for you. Tinbender told you what you need to look for in a final result (no marks). Note that the rods do not lay flat together. They form a shallow pyramid if you will. Now go and bring them to us.

    Again, Good Job

    Hey Guys,
I understand what your talking about.... and I "do" have a vise grip that I repaired years ago that would work...

    I thought about using it...

    Anywho,
The stuff I'm using this fluting action on , is only the Tail end of the stringer material I made...

It's just to fade the end of the stringer to the inside of the frame...

So , I don't really another Fluting tool...

Some of the pictures didn't transfer... I had a few more tools I made...

I understand, there will be very little load on the tail end. Man, that channel bender is Crazzzy. I like it. I could use that in a couple of weeks. Would it be improper to ask you to draw it out and post it with a material list? I was going to snip and bend then weld back to make the formers on the bottom. Even with your tool I might have to make a couple of snips but nothing like I was going to. I couldn't get the flutes to work worth a hoot for me on that channel. You are the clever one, but I have a vise grip dimpling tool. smile

    Re: Fluting Tool - Homemade

The principal behind the Channel bender... ( it bends small dia tube also )

It's three bearings... The bearings all fit inside the channel...

The tool is different than the drawing... I put a slot in the center , so the bearing could be pulled , loading pressure...

then pull your material through... load more pressure and pull the material through again...

repeat.... Or.... Only run the material in the area you want curved...
    .
I might still make the tool... I'm not using the old vise grips for anything...
    .

PS Did you see the flush rivet maker ??? Flush rivets are VERY expensive...

One wack with my tool converts a regular SS rivet , into a Flush rivet...

I slapped together another one , from the junk vise grip I had...

It still needs some work , I think I need to taper the front of the round stock...

    I used Stainless Steel...

    Hey Guys,
OK... I'm done with my Vise grip Flutter tool...

and... I believe it's "Better" than the Store bought one...

    I "Tappered" my round stock...

Two reasons... One... it let's it get all the way in the piece being flutted...

Two... it makes sense NOT to crimp the toe of the crimp as much as the heel....

    The Pictures are the proof...

Notice "Before" has a big Hump at the toe...

My Tappered mod has a gradual transition...
