Re: looking for wood aircraft plans
Regarding Skeeter's suggestions, I have always heard good things about the Mini-Max (though it is mid-winged, not low-winged), mixed reviews on the Fisher products (mostly structure related), and have noted that most people who have built and flown the Volksplane have been disappointed with its performance (especially with the VP2). There are a number of planes out there that fit your criteria. I'll throw another in the mix: Bowers Flybaby. Bruce |
Re: looking for wood aircraft plans
Should you go the MiniMax route and choose a VMax then in addition to the four cylinder air cooled Type 1 VW engine you can either go with a mid wing or a high wing option. This plane has a 700# GW an is very solidly put together, with it you could easily add floats, ski's or a cargo pod later. I'd love to see them upgrade this design into a 2 seater with Grove's gear...

Re: looking for wood aircraft plans
the sd-1 minisport is nice airplane with good performance on small horse power engine but it require some prefab parts such us wing , vertical and horizontal spar the price for plans are current 315 $ + 27$ postage to usa, the prefab parts with bushing fitted in spars and wing tunnel finished is about 1000$ + about 400$ for shipping ,there is similar small low wing all wooden design called pik-26 minisytki ,i think the design comes from finland ,but im not sure the plans are about 240 eur ,or you can go with druine turbulent or taylor monoplnae both will fly with vw engine ,there is lot of good design and lot of bad design around its just the preference ou are looking for if you are not in rush and 50 mph speed is ok than you can look on www.ragwing.net there is plent of proven designs ,as well as minimax with thousand flying around the globe good luck on the pick that is the hardest part pick the right plane

Re: looking for wood aircraft plans
Here it the one you need: The Jurca Tempete. It is a French design that has been around since the '50s or '60s. It is low wing, small, very robust all wood construction and aerobatic to boot. Build it open cockpit or put a canopy on it. Build it from plans only. A friend bult one back in the early '70s and still flys it regularly. Find a small Contental 65hp or similar for it and you will have a very fine little plane. Wally |

thank you for all the info im going to give the minimax 1600R "Sport" a shot whith a cheap snowmobile engine I am a first time builder and im getting ready to clean out the old garage and I dont make a lot of money so if anyone knows where i can get the plans cheaper than $200 please reply thanks a lot |
Re: looking for wood aircraft plans
thanks for all the help iv spent hours on google scrolling down lists if it haven't ben for all your help I wouldn't have found what I was looking for so I think Im going to go whith the minimax 1600R "Sport" thankyou all |
Re: looking for wood aircraft plans
Post your request in the wanted section here and other forums you might belong to. Also keep an eye out for plans on Barnstormers and such. In reality the $200.00 for plans may sound expensive, but it's not. Also purchasing portions of the parts kits may very well save you money in the long run.

Re: looking for wood aircraft plans
I too was seriously considering the minimax 1600R until I remembered the Volksplane VP-1. A much simpler airplane to build with similar performance to the minimax. The Yahoo group is full of knowledgeable people who bend over backwards to help you out. The plans are CHEAP, only $59.00 from Aircraft Spruce and you get a design handbook too. I'm about 60 hours into my build over the last year and already have something that resembles an airplane. (I don't work fast, only a couple hours a week) |
Re: looking for wood aircraft plans
Hi Jess, I am a bit late joining in because I think you made your choice already, but I just visited someone who is building a SD-1 Minisport. I am planning to build one and already bought the plans. Here's a review: Plans are the best I have seen and the person building it agree's. This plane is his 9th homebuilt plane so he has some experience! The plane beeing built is a 51% kit, it comes with everything you need except engine and engine support. What was already built was done very well, and the composite parts are really well finished, coming from very well shaped molds. Chech workmanship is excellent. I have quite long legs but fit in really comfortable, sitting position is leaning backwards quite a bit, you probably have to get used to it. I have enough headroom, the plane fits like a glove. This is not a plane for bringing luggage, there is no room, except for bringing your passport and maybe a drinking bottle! All the metal parts fit, and are finished well. It appears all parts are there! The plane is really small, and the folding of the wings (glider stile) is easy. The only problem with this plane: 1/2 VW or Citroen Visa engines are too heavy, leaving choices to a 2-stroke engine or the Briggs and Stratton 25+ Hp. The latter beeing the most reliable choice I think. For less experienced pilots there are plans for a 3gear version, which will make it 5 kg heavier. The cheapest way to build the SD is buying the plans and the prefabricated spars. This way you are certain that the main construction parts are OK. The rest is wood and metal work. Metal parts are the most time consuming. I just informed if they sell metal kits, waiting for an answer. Contact with Spacek company is very accurate, and Igors English is excellent, he answers within 24 hours, which is very nice. The 51% kit was picked up by the owner at the factory and the impression he got there was OK. End of spring I will order my parts, just figuring out which kit I want. In Europe this plane can be registered as an Ultralight. The PIK 26 is an older design resembling the SD very much and is Plans built. It can be fitted with 1/2 VW, I do not know if it is an ultralight (by european standards). The wings are fixed so home storage will be difficult. Wingspan is smaller then the SD and the PIK is a bit more difficult to fly. I tried to cantact for plans but no succes, I wonder if they are still available. |
