Dacron over Fiberglass over Plywood??

Why?

The plans I am working from say to put a layer of fiberglass/epoxy over the plywood. Mainly for protection, I guess.

The wings, have a plywood D tube and ply near the roots, I can understand. There is a lot of open area that needs to be covered with fabric.

But what about the fuselage? There are no open areas. It is all covered with plywood. Why would I have to cover the ply with fiberglass, and then again with fabric? Would not the fiberglass by itself be sufficient? Would the weight savings be significant?
