A number of hardwoods have a closed grain. Cherry, Hickory, and Birch come to mind.

One of the suggestions for T88 is to apply it to both surfaces and let it soak into the wood for a bit. But how well does this work with a closed grain wood? I was wondering if it would be beneficial to rough up the surface of such woods so the epoxy would get a better grip?
