    Reno 2012

I am beginning to plan for Reno 2012. I have always had some excuse prevent me from attending and I believe that following the accident this year it will be very important for the aviation community to rally with RARA and Reno.

I might take my RV and Jeep and camp at Stead or maybe fly up and get a room in town, looking for suggestions from folks who have been there.

Moved your thread to "events" since that seems more appropriate. I'd really like to be there, but that's not going to happen in a short time frame; simply getting there would be 2000 US$+

    Re: Reno 2012

So I have been looking into going up to Reno for the races next year, and it looks doable. Thinking I would take the Jeep and just tent camp if I go solo - maybe take the RV if I can get 2 or 3 others to go with and chip in for fuel and RV lot.

Has anyone camped at Reno? I will check with some of my Chapter buddies as well. I used to go to Sun N' Fun and would take an RV, have also tent camped at OSH and SNF.

Thanks for any info you can share.

I haven't camped at Reno, but I attended the '92 event, staying in a hotel room in town.

Personally, I'd take the RV if I were you, or get a hotel room. Reno is high-desert camping: Hot in the daytime and cold at night. Fine if you really want the "get away from it all" experience, but Reno-Stead turns into a small city for race week. Finding a place to shower and other niceties might be a challenge. Forget privacy.

If you decide to get a hotel room instead, book it now. If you wait until after the first of the year, you'll have a hard time finding a nice room.

Thanks for the reminder on high-desert conditions Topaz, do you recall how far from the casino's to Stead?

I have frequent player cards with Harrah's, Sam's and Station casino's from Vegas - might use one of those if I decide not to take the RV.

Well, it was nearly ten years ago, but my recollection is that it's about a 20-30 minute drive from downtown Reno to the parking lot at the airport site. Might be a little less, but not much.

More now with the traffic jam into and out of Stead Field if you travel at the peak times (To the race in the morning, from the race in the late afternoon/evening).

I used to tent camp there in the days when there wasn't much of a crowd and it was easy to get an invite to use someone's shower. Now, when I go, I stay in the casinos and just plan to get ahead of the crowd in the morning and behind it in the evening.

Thanks guys - I have reached out to a couple friends about maybe joining me in the RV, otherwise I will probably drive up and stay in town.
