    4130 Tubing Sources?

I'm building a BearHawk and I've been comparing prices on 4130 tubing for the fuse.

Wick's seems to be pretty pricey. 5/8" tubing with .120 wall thickness lists for $4.67/ft here.

I found a place called the Chassis Shop that sells the same tube for $2.52/foot here.

They are both MILT 6736 - 4130 tubing. Is there any reason not to use the cheaper tubing? Is there something better about the Wick's stuff that justifies the +$2.00/foot?

Safety is a top priority for me, so I'm not going to skimp on the quality of materials to save money. But, if both sources are identical, I don't see any reason to spend an extra ~$1,000 for all the tubing I will have to buy.

Does anyone use a different resource for tubing, or is Wick's pretty much the standard?

I get most of my tubing from EMJ metals (www.emjmetals.com). Their prices are pretty good, especially if you order in full, 20' lengths. Depending on how much you order, there have been a few times where I could order more than I needed but due to the price break beyond a certain point, I paid less than if I ordered just enough.

    Dillsburg Aero
Here's what Budd Davisson had to say about them:

from what I can gather. Everyone who has this type of steel gets it from Dillsburg

What papakeith said. Never bought from Dillsburg but have heard they have EVERY size made.
And then there is always Aircraft Spruce. They have a good assortment and will cut it and pack/crate it for a small fee.

    The tubing is identical.
    Wick's has a massive mark-up.

Compare their price for a randomly sected product:
    "Evans NPG+ Coolant"
    at Wick's it's $38.71
    at www.hrpworld.com it's $27.50
    at www.midcoastperformance.com it's $27.95

Maybe you should call and ask then why they're 40% dearer?

I've bought from Charlie Vogelsong (Dillsburg Steel) several times - good prices, good service. Never failed to get at least what I ordered, and then some.

Well, Dillsburg seems the way to go. I would still like to check prices and shipping with them. Do they have a website or maybe a catalog I could order? I still might save in shipping if I go with the Chassis Shop since they are considerably closer to me.

Thanks for the help guys. I'll give Dillsburg a call to check for pricing.

Hey Rhino, did you give up on the BearHawk? I see you changed your avatar.

Orion, I tried to register at EMJ so I could check prices, but it listed a company name as a required field to fill out. Do they only sell to businesses?

I don't think so - try calling one of their distribution sites directly and ask for sales. But you should be able to get to their inventory list without registering. I'll be curious how they compare in price to Dillsburg.

i think dillsberg are the biggest buyers in the country of 4130 tube [economies of scale], they buy direct from the steel mills. I read somewhere they infact supply A' spruce.

I'm currently limited to LSA for medical reasons. It was becoming obvious that I could be waiting a long time for the Bearhawk so I chose an LSA to build. I still want to build a Bearhawk down the road, but I want something in the interim.

    Re: 4130 Tubing Sources?

Dillsburg is a good supplier; he can be kind of crabby though!

I will usually make-up a spread sheet with the exact tubing needed, then compare prices. I will fax Dillsburg a copy and they will fax-back a quote.

I like to buy from them, because they are more of a Mom and Pop.

Aircraft Spruce, however, is now price matching any quotes. And sometimes they are cheaper to begin with. Their 3/8" .035, for instance, is currently cheaper the Dillsburg's.

If the difference is $45 or so, it's hard not to price match and apply it to the $140 shipping that could be associated with the length of the package!
