VW case stud "O rings"

I've seen some VW engines with a type of "O ring" in a beveled recess at the base of the cylinder studs. None of the on line videos seem to mention them. Some hi po engines use "shuffle pins" in this area. What's the story? Are these "O rings" optional or required?
