I was thinking about wing struts.

It has been said that tapering the struts is a good idea in order to help with the buckling problem. But although not impossible, tapering a streamlined strut that is 6 to 8 feet long sounds like a bit of a challenge.

What I was wondering about is making the strut out of 2 pieces of round aluminum tube (6061 or 2024) that are 3 or 4 feet long. Then splicing them together with another larger tube that is also 3 or 4 feet long, in effect making it thicker in the middle.

This would then be covered with a foam/glass streamlined fairing.

The cost of this would be lower than buying streamlined strut material. Shipping would be lower, since they could ship UPS and not freight. And the effect should be similar to tapering.
