One variation is a cable-braced, Cub-style gear that replaces the diagonal rear strut (or the forward strut of designs like the DH Tiger Moth) with both forward and rear bracing cables.
That looks like a neat system, easy to make, and probably lighter than the equivalent tubular strut, especially one in compression. I could see it working not only with a Cub-style bungie tension strut between the legs but also with a compression strut with bungies, rubber disks or springs from the axle up to the lower or upper longeron. Cables are pretty darn tough, and you can even get stainless steel ones. So why don't we see gear like this more often?
