How does the designer select the rib spacing for cloth covered wings?

I imagine wing loading, cloth strength, and the spacing of the lacing on the ribs determines how far apart the ribs can be spaced, but I've not seen a formula for this. Aircraft operating speed may also be a factor.

The strength (total load bearing) of the individual ribs would count, of course, but I'm curious how the fabric limits the spacing.

Is there a good reference book?

Thanks,

Karl
