Films can have catastrophic tears. Fibrous fabrics tend to be more resistant. I'm thinking of this in the context of a human powered airplane that is designed to be more durable. Maybe some aluminum or silicon plated half mil mylar shrunk over the fabric to maybe refect some UV rays and smooth the surface. Or maybe a different material would be needed for that.
Are there tear resistant fabrics around 2 oz per square meter? What do the lightest ultralights use?
