I saw an interesting engine concept at the SAE show in detroit last week (yes I'm an automotive engineer).
It was a 2 stroke diesel with 2 pivoting cylinders. It produces 120 Hp and utilizes the Rotax 951 crankcase and crankshaft (marine engine).
There seemed to be a lot of innovation in the design. They didn't display a lot of data, so there was no proof that the innovations amounted to anything. It looks promising though. Very few moving parts and the pivot design should have exceptional inherit reliability and light weight.
The company is targeting automotive (V8) design and mortorcycle applications eventually for volume, but will try to break into the market in experimental light aircraft. They plan to market the 120Hp motor above and 3 cylinder version with 180Hp. They seem to be several years from market though.
They said they would have a display at Oshkosh this year. If your there check it out and report back.
They have a web site at http://www.pivotalengine.com/.
