I just bought 2 planks of doug fir, 1"x6"x72". One has well defined grain of dark and light rings, 10/inch pitch, and the other is of much finer grain and of very light color, almost a total absence of dark rings, or rather, the dark rings are very thin. The first one weighs 7 pounds, the other one weighs 4 pounds.

Does any one know the reletive merits of two such boards, particulary regarding strength and durability?
