Hey guys,
I'm very seriously thinking about buying a used homebuilt aircraft, and I'd like to start a thread for general advice about going through the process. The models I am personally most seriously considering are an RV6/7/8 or a MCR.01-sportster. Some questions I currently have;

1) When looking for a mechanic who can do a prepurchase inspection, how knowledgeable does he need to be of the type of aircraft to be able to effectively conduct the prebuy?

2) What are some of the warning signs to watch out for?

3) I think my tentative plan, if I go this route, would be to find a mechanic who knows the plane type well, fly there, and work with him on an annual for about a week, and hopefully learn enough to be able to annual the plane myself from then on. Is this realistic?

Thanks in advance!
