It was 50 years ago today that a fire aboard the Apollo 1 capsule during a training event led to the death of Gus Grissom, Ed White, and Roger Chaffee. More here on a memorial service attended by hundreds in FL.

A terrible tragedy, and a terrible way for anyone to leave this life. I was just a tot, but still remember the impact this had on my parents as they discussed it much later.

The accident did result in important improvements to safety procedures and reduced flammability of materials used onboard.

Lots of folks have made lots of sacrifices, small and huge, to move us forward.
