Seems to be kinda like snake oil... do they really work?

I have a 503 that has a bit more vibration than I like. I was contemplating a new 3 blade composite prop to replace the 2 blade wood prop after reading that 3 blade props are generally smoother. But if a $200 balancer will do the trick, I won't have to buy an $800 prop. I certainly don't want to waste my money though.
