A number of years ago I was in a Canadian version of Harbor Freight (Princess Auto) and stumbled across a used generator in their surplus section that caught my attention. According to the data plate on it, it was made by Chrysler and rated at 55(?) horsepower. What's more is that it was an air cooled horizontally opposed four cylinder which looked about as much like an airplane engine as you could ask for. In spite of the frame and generator and controls and whatnot, it was reasonably light to the point of not needing wheels. I even wondered if the thing was largely aluminum because I recall plenty of chipped paint but no rust.
I had never seen anything like it before and haven't heard of them since, but has anyone else heard of these? My guess is they either fall in a weird RPM range that doesn't agree with propellers or they were never mass produced.
