I was reading an article in the EAA publication "Wood" about douglas fir being unsuitable for use in aircraft in areas that are subject to tension or bending because of compression failure. The author, who designed the "Volksplane", said that compression failure is hard to detect and that one should stick with certified spruce for this reason. Any thoughts on this.
The author was W. Samuel Evans and te article was called "The Use of Non-Certificated Wood." This article was previously in Sport Aviation in the late 1960's.
