Certification question. What if I don't want a special N-number?

I am now in the final stages of building my RV, getting started on filling out the paperwork. Have a few questions about this, wondering if people who have gone there before may have hints. I supposed I can call the FAA, but thought I'd ask here first.

Everything I read talks about reserving that special N-number. But what if I don't care what number I get? Just like I don't want vanity plates on my car, I'd rather my plane's number not mean anything. Can I just leave the registration number blank on the 8050-1?

This:
Amateur-Built Aircraft Registration

Seems to imply you don't have to register one.

Also on the 8050-88, what is meant by "U.S. Identification"? My name? Aircraft name? Either of these seem to have other fields on the form.
