I am in the process of building a pietenpol aircamper, and a friend was getting a box down from the rafters and dropped it on the top front cross beam and broke it. When this cross beam broke, it also cracked the longeron from the front on back about six inches. The longeron is 1" by 1" and the crack is about half an inch deep. Now usually if you need to replace a piece of wood, you can do a splice, but i'm not sure if I can do one here due to the fact that there are a number of fittings that are in the vicintiy and i thought i read somewhere that you cant put a splice where fittings attach. I may be wrong. Any ideas?
