Just a quick question and maybe a not so quick answer

    Hi guys.
Alright, here is the situation. I'm looking at building a Pietenpol Air Camper, probably with a Corvair conversion. My question is would it be too under-powered to fly safely in Colorado. Specifically near the Front Range and around the Denver metro area. I love the looks of it and love the fact that it isn't some carbon fiber go fast or load to the gills with technology. But I don't want to start and find out that it's too low powered to fly safely up here. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

I would think under camber, but I'm probably wrong on that. To be honest, I'm not sure which would be better in my situation.

Melloguy, There's no quick answer to your question. Here's three things to consider. 1. How much horse power will a Corvair conversion produce at your altitude.
    2. The empty weight of your Air Camper when you finish building it.
    3. The weight at which it will be normally flown at, your weight plus fuel and what ever else.

Re: Just a quick question and maybe a not so quick answer

I know there isn't. I'm looking at either the 100 or 110 horsepower engines. I think the 120 horsepower version might be too much for the Air Camper, but correct me if I'm wrong. As for the empty weight, since it will be my first build I'm going to assume that I'm going to come out on the heavy side of things, but hopefully not by too much, but I would guess the empty weight would be between 650 and 725 pounds. As for normal flying weight, I'm guessing that it will be around 1,000 pounds or so, figuring my weight and 12 gallons of fuel.

This post on another forum speaks well to your question. I suspect the turbo Subaru is of similar power to the Corvair.

The FAA registry has 2-3 listed in Colorado. Search out those guys from the FAA web.

Thank you guys for the responses and help. I'm sure this won't be the last thing I ask about.
