I hope the next FAA administrator is at minimum, a pilot, mechanic, and aircraft owner.

These are NOT nothing. They might not be everything that you wanted, but it is of some advantage to a large number of pilots, and a MASSIVE improvement for anyone under special issuance.

Yes, it would be great if you could get a driver's license medical, but that wasn't possible with the politics involved. This is preferable to a driver's license medical bill that failed or, as would most likely happen, never made it out of committee for a vote. The days of a minority population's opinion forcing politicians to vote a certain way is long gone, unless that minority population has massive financial resources. We, as pilots, are a minority of the population, and despite having a elevated average income, we fall far, far short of the money to burn necessary to force our way in Washington.

"All the progress now or it's no progress" is not a viable view of how the world works. There's more options available now than there were. Sport Pilot was the same way, didn't get everything that was wanted, but there's a lot of people flying under it than there would have been without it. If you called it useless and nothing it would be an insult to those pilots that need it to fly. This is no different.

No one got screwed. If they couldn't fly before and still can't, that's not screwed, that's just not helped. If this rule made someone who could currently fly ineligible, they would be screwed by this. But there isn't any provision that does that.

Does a family doctor have the right to not sign anything in fear of liability? My family doctor doesn't know anything about aviation whatsoever. He has nothing to gain by signing, you can bet your azz he'd be worried about losing something. Who is in charge of educating my family doctor with the new rules?

+1. And take a look at what the exam he is supposed to administer is composed of. Your health insurance (that is paying the doc) doesn't include time for all that stuff. Anyway, maybe AOPA will be able to provide a list of these helpful doctors.

I'll have to ask my doctor I guess, I just know he'll give me that look like "wtf are you talking about"

What percentage of the pilot population are we talking about? How many special issuances are issued every yr? This may not be nothing but its next to nothing.

Frankly, rather than what they've now proposed, I'd prefer to have a "4th Class medical" by an AME, done every 5 years, with a "no fail reported" to the FAA (so the pilot can still fly with the LSA restrictions, with a DL). Couple that with the self-education/self-certifying measures and it would probably make >everybody< happier than this thing.

Worse than nothing. Because progress to any sensible outcome that could grow personal aviation is now suspended for another twenty years or whatever.
You can't expect a bureaucracy to curtail rules. There needs to be a complete new agency for private aviation.
