My grandfather flew 171 combat missions in the P-38, P-39, and P-47; my dad was an air traffic controller and 170 pilot; my mom sold travel luggage to Mohamed Atta, the 9/11 hijacker mastermind; I'm restoring Dorothy, a Volmer Jensen VJ-24W motor glider I bought on eBay for $38, and Alice, a Chotia Woodhopper I bought on Barnstormers for $99. I'm in no hurry; doing it to fly, and to learn how to restore hopeless case ultralights.

    CUTE!

(Though I'm a little doubtful if it is truly an ultralight.)

I vaguely remembered these had spoilerons instead of real ailerons, giving them them the roll responsiveness of a garbage scow in an icy filled Alaskan river full of floating lumber company logs. So I emailed the seller, mainly to get his real email address should the ad expire and it go unsold, cause, well, it looks like a lot of work:

It has spoilers on upper wing. I have not attempted to estimate cost of repairing and recovering. I am not the builder. Plane was built by a well known aviation family in Iowa that owned SIG manufacturing. The plane was donated for a fund raiser and auctioned. I ended up with the plane from the buyer as part of a multiple plane purchase.
I'd make it an ultralight. Lose some exhaust pipe, some instrument panel, half the gas tank, the seat cushion can go, and fix it with the single most weight saving measure of them all... paint the magic number "250 lbs" on the side somewhere and put it on a data plate. Don't you know already, all ultralights magically weigh 250 exactly, with a healthy extra 4 pound fudge factor to spare? I wouldn't be parking it in front the FAA booth at Oshkosh. Actually, I might, just for spite and to fight. : - ) The local corrupt police station never did get their $3500 in traffic tickets out of me for riding around with absolutely no paperwork or license or insurance at all... I doubt the FAA could do any better with a picturesque fine for doing what I loved and not hurting anybody. All my fines get framed and hung on my French cafe corner wall like WW1 enemy aircraft tail insignia war trophies.

It would break my heart tho to take that faded fabric off. It just screams barn find... or... old pair of sneakers.

While I was being flabbergasted at the piece of canvas that passed for a seat and floor (don't go putting your foot through the bottom), I just now caught the "Vice Grips" in the cockpit photo...

    Re: Ebay Today

Amazing what you can find...was talking to a guy at a local Bike shop, this is what was in the back. His price is way high at $6000, Kwack 440 engine, apparently a Fisher biplane Ultralight. His Gramp said it made weight. But with a nose like that, who needs dive brakes??? Interesting "beater" ultralight if it was at $1000.

50% better. Only leaves me 76lb for the rest of the airframe, though.
