As a radar repairman in the 1960's we all knew tracking over water is a hit and miss affair. Water vapor and air temperatures frequently did weird things to the radar pulses, ditto for shortwave radio. I'm totally confounded that commercial aircraft engines/aircraft systems are monitored via satellite and the planes location is not. Just visit any major trucking or shipping business and ask where your shipment is then look at a map on a PC screen and see you’re package on an aircraft or truck moving on some airway or highway. It would appear aircraft engine/plane OEM's are more worried about lawsuits over their hardware than if those passengers are lost somewhere. Of course we'll spend $10 to 6th power searching rather than eliminating this problem, amazing. It seems if a cell phone can be tracked why not a commercial airliner, after all hasn't this happen before? Isn't stupidity defined as repeating the same mistake over and over? Ed
