I've an opportunity to purchase some spruce from a nice gentleman about 5 hours from my home. It's the wood kit for the Pietenpol produced by Western Aircraft in BC. My concern is that it was purchased in 1999 and has been stored in the shipping container in his hanger since then. I'm told the shipping containers are hard cardboard tubes used for concrete forming. They've been kept up on sawhorses indoors and have been wrapped in packaging tape to waterproof them.
Other than rot, mold and mice chew marks, is there anything else I should look for in deciding if this is a good purchase? If it's been stored flat, should I still worry about warpage or should it be as straight today as when it was packed? I'd hate to have the spar material warped yet already cut and planed to the plans dimensions. Not sure how I would straighten it.
Anyway, hope to hear from someone who has been in this boat before. Thanks.
