For those of you who didn't hear about this, I wrote a brief description of the incident below. Some nice photos are available at the link below.

This will have an impact on the image of composite structures, and may also impact sales of the new generation aircraft like the 7E7 which is leading the way in composite construction. Damage detection is one of the leading drawbacks for the use of composite materials in aircraft.

About 30 minutes after departure from Cuba, in rout to Quebec City, an Air Transat A310 lost it's rudder somewhere off the coast of Florida. Although the pilot realized he had some problem with the flight controls, he didn't realized that the whole rudder was lost.
After being denied permission to land in Florida, the crew safely returned the aircraft to Cuba without further incident. FAA stated that the crew of the A310 did not declare an emergency... although this is still a controversy here in Canada.
