Please advertise when this self training will take place. I'll make a special trip to come watch and get some fresh Darwin material.

Re: Icon A5 Update - No Deliveries!?!

They are busy trying to figure how the 35% border tax will impact sales!!
  4. Re: Designing the fastest two place VW-powered airplane

The C-85 powered tailwind would do about 140 mph. That was phenomenally faster than any other 2 place C-85 powered airplane in 1958.
  5. Re: Designing the fastest two place VW-powered airplane

The first Tailwind, built in '53, called "Magic Carpet" had a C-85. That plane had a max speed ~140 mph, which was much better than any other 2 place, C-85 powered plane of the day. Steve built a...

Re: Sonex down at Wittman Field

Oh, I agree with declining to depart from an intersection when more distance is readily available in exchange for a few extra minutes of taxi. That is a wise investment.

    But what happens when...
  7. Re: Designing the fastest two place VW-powered airplane

    >2x the hp (or torque, lol) makes a significant difference in speed and performance. A Tailwind is not going to fly on VW power so it's sorta out of contention if that is a criteria.

    Steve...

Re: Sonex down at Wittman Field

The people in the back of the plane rarely know enough about flying to know what an intersection departure means. My short career lasted ~40 yrs and I'm still working.

    Vowing to never depart from...

Re: Sonex down at Wittman Field

True but what BBerson says is correct, don't stall and crash out of control. Had they used full length and stalled the end result would not change.

    Re: Using Magnesium Tubes

lol, a BLEVE is very impressive!

When I worked in a machine shop we kept magnesium chips in a separate can. Ball it up like steel wool and it's good for starting campfire, lol.

Re: Sonex down at Whitman Field

That's a good rule if your flying allows it. Over the course of my flying career haven't always had that luxury. Have to figure out a way to adapt and make non-standard ops work without compromising...

Re: Sonex down at Whitman Field

Would the occupants notice or be in a position to observe smoke from the exhaust? I have no idea what kind of visibility from the cockpit.

Re: Sonex down at Whitman Field

That is more concerning to me than the fact that departure was from an intersection. Using 2/3'rds of the available runway to get airborne where it should have been < 1/3 gives the impression of...
  16. Re: Designing the fastest two place VW-powered airplane

Bill Clapp put together a Wittman W8 Tailwind with a Corvair engine although it appears the plane had W10 wings. Can probably get him to comment on performance:

Mixture to idle cutoff is a standard line item on the forced landing checklist for many light aircraft and something rehearsed early in training. Once a forced landing was recognized I could see that...

  19. Re: Designing the fastest two place VW-powered airplane

True, but on the other hand, don't want to die of old age before trip is completed due to a slow plane
  20. Re: Designing the fastest two place VW-powered airplane

There are several planes in the Questair Venture category, Glasair III, Lancair IV, SX300. Brokow Bullet. Success is based on the simple concept of shoving the largest, highest HP engine possible...

Re: So if I flew up into a cloud...

You are correct of course, 1 mileclearofclouds apparently got muddied between brain and fingers. At any rate, flying at 45-50 mph, getting behind the plane is highly improbable. I can't imagine an...

  25. Re: About to build Pietenpol - How do I first go about it?

I'd build a Ford powered Piet but only as a back burner project. I'd need something to fly while undertaking that kind of project or I'd lose interest. No time constraints would allow me to do all my...
