Oh, if only I didn't have a shop full of projects already.... My heart goes pitter-patter at the thought of would you could design and build around that engine.

Wikipedia does't say how many of these engines were manufactured.

In an old Sport Aviation there is an article about a 9/10's P-51 built around one of these. Also there was a tiny fighter that Bell made using one of these.

Re: Ranger V 770 Crate Motor

I'm wondering what the condition of engine, supercharger and accessories would be after 70-odd years.
It seems likely that the engine would have to be torn down and rebuilt even though it's a "crate" engine.
Another concern is the availability of spare parts.
Anybody able to answer these questions with any degree of authority?

Re: Ranger V 770 Crate Motor

    Iceman,

I have some experience with the Ranger V-770's. While the engine does appear to be new, you never know without a complete breakdown and inspection, even if it came with a logbook. Most spare parts are available. I have one on a roll around stand, and there are several more engines and new parts 6 miles from my home. The major weak link are the carburetors. All of the NOS bellows for the carbs are cracked or aged beyond use and there is not enough demand for new ones to make production cost effective. We are now looking to adapt a Bendix FI unit from an R-985.

Is the engine still availble and will you crate it?
