What's the general consensus about the pros and cons of lockable versus steerable tailwheels?

I have only ever flown the typical steerable types, never a lockable one.

It seems to me mechanically simpler to use a lockable one, without all the exposed, draggy springs and all that. With differential braking and unlocked tailwheel, ground handling ought to be perfectly good, for taxying. How about landing in a crosswind?

Has anyone had experience with this? Can it "tame" an otherwise squirelly taildragger?
