Logging time in a UL?

Sorry if this has been asked before, I went back through the last 4 pages and didn't find anything - is it possible to log UL time as time towards a certification? I would expect no but I'm just checking

Re: Logging time in a UL?

The short answer is no.

The FAA does not consider (legal, part 103) ultralights as aircraft at all. There are no limits or training requirements to fly one. Anyone can get in one and "fly" it.

It is probably good experience anyway even if it doesn't count toward any sort of airplane rating.

Re: Logging time in a UL?

It really depends on how the U/L is licensed, I've seen Part 103 compliant aircraft that were registered with an N-number. That time is loggable. The same could be said if the U/L were licensed as a light-sport aircraft.

Re: Logging time in a UL?

If the UL is licensed it's not legally a UL any more. You can log it (I do), but it doesn't count for anything.

Hmmm... if you get caught flying, say, an overweight UL, the FAA considers it an unlicensed aircraft and not a UL. Once the FAA considers it an aircraft, does that mean any time you logged would automatically be valid loggable aircraft time? Of course at up to $1000 fine per offense (i.e., per flight) that could be some pretty expensive flight time...

Re: Logging time in a UL?

Better make it real long cross country flights to get your money's worth then! Anyone ever inflight-refueled a UL?

Re: Logging time in a UL?

There's always the option to carry a hand gas can and fill 'er up in flight - does that count? :p
