New Feature - Embed Videos In Posts

I'm pleased to announce that I've added a new feature to HBA. We now have the ability to embed videos in our posts from the following video hosting sites: Youtube, Flikr, Yahoo Video, Google Video, and Vimeo. Let me know if there are any other video hosting sites you would like to see added and I'll see what I can do.

I'd also like to mention that posting videos should conform to the same standard as posting any other type of content. It should be relevant, clean, and in good taste. A little discretion can go a long way....Thanks!

I would also like to thank all the Beta Testers who volunteered to test this feature. Your help was very much appreciated!

I've embedded a short tutorial which explains the process. It's a bit blurry, but I think you will get the idea. Just click the video to begin viewing it.

Re: New Feature - Embed Videos In Posts

Jake, it seems to simply recognize any youtube URL in the message, without any BB code?

Looking at the video link I posted the other day, which had a URL BB code, it embeds the videl, with the "URL==" text as a centered title, which is also clickable to take you to the youtube page. Is that intentional or accidental?

Re: New Feature - Embed Videos In Posts

Correct, no BB code is required. It's automatically recognizes the link as a supported video hosting site link and packages the video into the container for viewing.

As for the title info, yes that is part of the modification. If there is a reason you see that it's not a good idea to have the title included let me know. I'm definitely open to suggestions.

Re: New Feature - Embed Videos In Posts

I don't see it as a problem, though it makes some older posts that included links look kinda funny. I wonder if ignoring the youtube embedding if it's inslde a BB code url link might be best, if somebody wanted to link to the external youtube page.

Re: New Feature - Embed Videos In Posts

I apologize. I didn't look closely enough at the video post you made the other day. If someone used BB code to create a link to a youtube video in the middle of a sentence, the video will sever the sentence. Additionally, the title of the video will be the portion of the sentence that the URL BB code was used on. That is accidental and not ideal.

Hmmm...Fixing that might be a bit of a problem. I will see if I can work it out. As for older links, this modification will only affect new posts and will not convert old youtube links into embedded videos. It has the capability to do that but I don't trust it not to corrupt the database. Now, if you edit an older post, even if you don't touch the youtube link in that post, the link will be concerted to a video when you save it. The system sees that edit as if it were being re-posted and converts the link. Is that what happened in your video post?

Re: New Feature - Embed Videos In Posts

Jake is that your voice in that video, I was surprised, I dont know why but I was expecting some kind of "famous" Texas accent, sometimes I struggle with some US folks/guys, but your accent is great you could work as an English teacher in free time.
Maybe it's a good idea(maybe not) to create a new main thread, something like recomended videos, there are a lot of nice videos related to the aviation but they aren't sometimes realted to our threads.

Re: New Feature - Embed Videos In Posts

Yeah...unfortunatly that was me in the video. I never got a call back from Morgan Freeman so I had to do it myself.... I grew up in the NW but have lived in the NE, SE, and have spent a lot of time visiting Kentucky, where my wife is from. I think my accent is about as generic as it gets. I've never had the opportunity to live in Texas though. I'm not fond of Armadillo burgers anyway.

The main problem with my voice is that growing up I was never really able to breath through my nose. Even after surgery several years back I've not been able to get the nasal tone to disappear. Kind of fits with the nerd factor of running a website though....

Yeah I've heard that Morgan is really busy at the moment maybe next time
Sorry about your problem and surgery, but like I said your pronunciation and accent is very easy to understand for foreigners people.

Yes, I went back and edited it to try the embedding, but not realizing what to do, I use the embed code that youtube gives you... which, of course didn't work. It was then that I noticed that it had converted the old link to an embedded video. I assumed that it converted everything retroactively, figuring that I was seeing a cached copy at first. So it's less of an issue than I thought if it doesn't convert old stuff.

It's not possible to have specific BB code to do embedding (like the IMG tag?)

I almost forgot to answer your question. Yes - There is a video repository on the way. It's a bolt-on product for the vBulletin software I run here. It's just waiting on the time and money. Here is an example of what it might look like.

That's what I was thinking too. We'll see what I can dig up. I do think that 95% of the time, having the video display in the post would be appropriate and the intent of the person who posts it. I would think it would be pretty rare for someone to post a youtube link that they did not want to be displayed. Maybe I'm wrong though.

Re: New Feature - Embed Videos In Posts

That's just wrong.....

Let's see...fewer weapons, less power, worse optics, antiquated electronics - but who does the ground guy ask for 9 times out of 10?? The Scouts cuz we get more done with a heck of a lot less. You know, whites of their eyes and all that....

I do wish my .50 cal could articulate though. That's the one thing I AM jealous of. Having to do monkey flips to get lined up on target then play chicken with who knows what can be inconvenient at times.

I guess you got me going...LOL
