Electronic gauges

Hey guys, I want to find some electronic gauges. So far I'm mostly looking for a fuel level gauge that displays in percentage, it doesnt neccessarily need to show how many gallons, I'd rather work with percentages its easier for me. The thing is I have multiple tanks, so to keep everything nice and simple I'm making a fuel gauges setup where i have a 2D drawing of the airplane and lines that point to each tank. each line leads to a nice simple LCD screen (much like a calculator) that displays the fuel level in percentage. the best I've seen so far is this: http://homepages.ihug.co.nz/~bvdb/tl25.html

I figure i could just chop up those gauges and fit it to my panel so it all looks nice and sleek, but those 3 buttons are still pretty unneccessary. i just want an LCD panel not bigger then that of a calculator which leads to the fuel level sensor in the tank. I'm trying to keep the electronics in this plane simple so that would be the best. have you guys seen any gauges like that? i could work with the ones above... but still...

While I'm here, are there any HUD units out there i can quickly and easily program? i would simply love to have a HUD in my aircraft. Also, any aircraft GPS' that have a nice graphic interface like the car ones but still display airports and terrain? i dont like the complex GPS' on airliners.

Thanks Guys,

-Matt

Re: Electronic gauges

I seem to remember something in a Kitplanes magazine a few years ago, where Jim Weir was using LCD readouts for just about any measurement, be it CHT, EGT, fuel, volts/amps... I'm not sure how I'd go about finding the article, but it might be on his website...
I'm going to look into it now...

Edit: found the articles...

although, it may be difficult to find some of those digital meters, since apparently, they've been discontinued...

Also, I seem to remember an article, at one time, could've been by Jim Weir, explaining how to use (either diodes or transistors) as a temperature sensor, but I can't for the life of me find that... anyone?

Re: Electronic gauges

I haven't seen any that basic but shadin make a few, as does another company micro-something.

I don't know of any HUD's that are available although there are plenty of EFIS systems like the dynon, chelton, grand rapids etc

Re: Electronic gauges

I've made a few capacitance type fuel gauges that are pretty simple and can be adapted to different meters easily enough.

I've attached the instructions and circuit diagram etc for a "group buy" project I ran on the UK Paramotor group recently. It should give you a few ideas about how to make a simple, self calibrating gauge. Replacing the specified LCD "needle" type meter with a digital voltmeter module, suitably calibrated to read in %, should be easy enough to do.

Ping me a PM if you need more on this project.

Re: Electronic gauges

Hi Looking at gauges for parmotoring I can pay more for a Vario with engine rpm & temp etc but will it really mean much to me touring round on a joy flight ?
Should i save the cash and just stick to a basic vario that connects with my GPS? thanks Pete.

Re: Electronic gauges

For paramotoring you don't really need a vario; the vertical speed indication of the GPS alone is sufficient (and not really necessary). Tach and temperature are more important but most people use a Tiny Tach and a simple round CHT and/or EGT, if that.

Re: Electronic gauges

Anything that flies I would want FAA approved, TSO rated gauges. But that is just me
