I need a GPS/COM.

Or rather I need a COM and I need a GPS so I think I
should try to combine. I am rebuilding a Fisher 101 (pre Koala) ultralight so I
don't need the newest, bestest, most feature filled GPS/COM available. What I
want to do is learn about the history/development of GPS/COM so I can buy a used
unit without missing out on important features.

For example when all the screens went to color from B&W. Was the last
generation of B&W GPS/COMs as good as the first gen of color units? Have the
developments since then made it a bad idea to buy a last gen B&W or first
gen color unit?

All I need are basic COM functions and decent situational awareness through
the GPS. I like the virtual instruments as well. I am sorely uninformed about
the subject so I need guidance. I have tried looking at the history of Garmin
Aviation GPS units but it is hard to know at what point development became
simple refinement with little or no improvements to utility or safety.

I have NO problem buying an old B&W unit if the only limitation is no
color!

Let me know what you think I should be looking for and at what point I am
looking at something too old. What is the most "primitive" unit that will be
safe and useful?
