    Ultralight Instrumentation / Transponder / Radio

    Hey, all

    Finally starting real work on the Affordaplane,
    and was wanting some tips on Instrumentation and such.

    I plan on the following instruments:

    Altimeter
    Compass
    Bank/Horizon
    Fuel
    Volt/Ammeter
    Tachometer
    Airspeed

    I may also tap into the 440 for Oil Pressure, not 100% certain.

    I'm assuming I'll need some sort of a radio in order to talk to the tower if I want to fly out of any sort of a real airport.

    I received my Aircraft Spruce catalog last week and found some nice pricing on instrumentation,
    so I'm not terribly concerned about having to add a few more if needed.


    Any thoughts on my list or tips on what model of radio would serve my needs?
    I'd prefer one that I could use headphones and mic inside my helmet with.

    I'd also appreciate any tips on instrumentation choices.

    Do I have enough? Too many? Etc.

    Is there a particular brand than anyone is partial to?

    I don't want digital units, nor are multi-Function electronic displays a consideration.

    Yeah, that would be a hoot on an Affordaplane. Might as well get an autopilot, flight management computer and a TCAS system too.

    Heh, the trim servos and such might make it a pound or two over 254 lbs, ya think?

    And actually what I meant by multi function display are those spiffy Horizon, Altimeter, Tach, "all in one" units.
    Not the 1 sq ft. LCD Panels that look like they belong in an F-22. ;-)

    I a thinking that the Kawasaki 440 is a two stroke twin. If it is what I remember, it does not have an oil pump. If it does have an oil pump, a lot of guys who fly two-strokes will strongly suggest you remove it and mix the oil with the gas. You will have one less thing that can go wrong and make the noise stop. Most ultralights don't have much of a glide ratio when the noise stops.

    I had thought the 440 was a 4 stroker.

    Yeah, if it's a 2 stroke, no point in an oil pressure gauge. ;-)

    Here is the acronym for Day VFR required instruments
    Some don't apply like the oil pressure and landing gear position indicator. hope this helps..

    having looked at the plans for the affordaplane I wouldn't recommend flying it into any towered airport.

    T- Tachometer
    O - Oil pressure gauge
    M - Manifold pressure gauge
    A - Altimeter
    T - Temperature gauge for each liquid cooled engine
    O - Oil temperature gauge

    F - Fuel gauge
    L - Landing gear position indicator
    A - Airspeed indicator
    M - Magnetic direction indicator (compass)
    E - ELT
    S - Seatbelts
