What licenses or certificates do I need to fly cross country, solo, or with a passenger (non-paying friend or family), at night, to land on grass, to use small controlled or uncontrolled airports, experimental, normal certified aircraft, and with a tail wheeled airplane?

Does "Private Pilot" plus a few endorsements cover all of the above? I assume that takes 40 hours of flying and a thousand dollars of instructor time if I have my own plane.

How much upkeep do the license grades and ratings have? Do I have to use them or fly every so often, be retested occasionally? I know I need the class three medical every three years while I am under 40.

I am thinking of getting a cheap, normal, tricycle gear plane to take lessons on when I get that far.
