    Best 4 Seat Homebuilt??

I'm looking to start building a 4 seat homebuilt. I would prefer a strictly plans built aircraft to help spread out the cost. I have many hours in a 172 so something similar would be good. Any suggestions?

If you don't mind taildraggers, Lot's of people like the Barrows Bearhawk. It would be a good one for spreading out cost. You can see some pictures and read some pilot reports on Budd Davisson's website.

Check out the Zenith CH640. 4 seats (actually 2+2), with solid performance numbers. It is based on a certified design the AMD CH2000/Alarus, and shares many of the same parts. It doesn't have the blazing speed of some homebuilts (try 140kt+ top speed), but all reports are that it has good characteristics. It is one of those planes that really should be more popular than it is.

Or the Zenith 801, for a direct comparison of two completely different designs that removes the designer / manufacturer from the equation. (I think the 801 is kit only, but it's a good reference point.)

If you don't mind building in composite, the Cozy MKIV is a great 4 place plans built plane with lots of building support on the web.

What about an RV-10? A bit pricey but one heck of a plane when finished.
You will have real 4 place plane with room for baggage, nice flying qualities, and pretty fast too. The excellent RV company support is well known and all the RV series planes are a straightforward build.
However as far as I know, it is only kit built.

Not well known but seems like a very good plane is the CF-4 "Four Runner" designed by Calbie Woods back in the 70's. Sort of a big Tailwind with metal wings. Steel tube and fabric fuselage with Lycoming O-360, seats 4 with baggage and cruises in the 180 knots range. The original is based out of Auburn Municipal in California. I contacted Calbie awhile back and he still sells plans for $200. Might build one after I saw the original, its a nice looking plane.

CF-4, huh? Nice looking plane and very straight forward configuration.

Another option is the BD-4 (BD-4.org Homepage). It has cruise in the 160kt+ range and can be built from plans.

Christavia MK4 for a very straight forward plans built tube and fabric design.

Yes, the Christavia is a very good choice. A friend of mine has one in the final stages of construction. For those not familiar, it looks very much like an enlarged, 4-place Aeronca Champ.

If anybody is interested in the Four Runner there is an article in Sport Aviation, August 1974 page 35. This was published right after it was flying. The plane has been cleaned up substantially from the photos in that old issue with a different cowl, windshield and what not, its a beauty now. but the article gives you an idea of the construction. Calbie also has plans for a metal wing for the Tailwind which is pretty popular.

I really would like to build one myself if I get the chance. Group build anyone?

As a 601 builder I'd love to be able to say the 640 but the RV10 is a awsome aircraft.

If you want low and slow and 4 seats the 801 is the way to go.
