What did happened to the Newbold rotary Diesel?

    Hello

About 10 years ago or even more, a Mr. Vern Newbold showed his engine at an airfair in Germany.

Vern Newbold was from the state of Colorado, as far as I remember.

It was a lightweight rotary diesel engine, with a combination of a kind of turbine with piston engine.

I wonder what did happend to this project.

This engine would perfectly match my current plane.

I haven't found out anything about Newbold, but here's an interesting link to something called a "smart plug" which basically can turn any engine into a diesel including a rotary. I just found them, and I don't know if they're any good or not.

Seams like the newbold concept just disappeared, too sad! :-(

I love WW1 airplanes and would love to own a working Le Rhone; having all that mass spinning is about the worst thing you can have. Awfully complicated engine; gear supercharged ww1 engine run on diesel that spins the block.

In the late '60's the Talmantz Museum at Orange County Airport used to run a Le Rhone on the weekends from a test stand. Vivid memory of the Castor Oil

Vern is a close personal friend of mine and he is still diligently working on his engine with some major improvements from the original engine. As with any project as this there are all kinds
of set backs that slow you down including money and time.

I wish Vern all the luck in the world and hope he realizes his dream. Perhaps you could convince him to post some of his progress. I first saw the engine displayed at Oshkosh 1989.

Interesting, but nothing in the "NEWS" section since 2003, which does not bode well.
