I like the ford modular V-8 This V-6 will take some looking at. Getting close to 1lb/hp

The 70's era Cadillac 500 V8 makes 550 ft lbs at 1600 RPM IIRC. For an iron engine, it is relatively light, and there are several aluminum parts available. For the right airplane (P-6E, He51), it would do pretty good as direct drive.
