C85-12F magnetos

Some questions about magneto choices and interconversions among Eisemann, Case and Slick magnetos for C85-12F use:

1) Are the drive gears interchangeable among Case, Eisemann LA4s and Slick 4201Rs for C85-12F engines?

2) Comments on rebuilding vs sending cores in exchange for new mags?

3) Comments on TBO, reliability, parts availability and weight for these?

4) Any good web articles on these issues?

5) What are the recommended shielded harnesses for these?

Thanks.

Champion has bought out Slick so the only two choices I'm aware of for new harnesses are Champion/Slick and Skytronics Aero-lite. Both are available from Chief Aircraft and a variety of other sources. I'm putting a Skytronics harness on my O-200 powered Luscombe. It has Bendix S4LN mags.

Chief Aircraft Inc - Aircraft Parts - Ignition Harnesses, Aerolite, Champion, Unison Slick

>I would say Not. Each is it's own world. The interface to the camshaft is the only commonalityl.

2) Comments on rebuilding vs sending cores in exchange for new mags?
>If you have an A&P friend he would help you rebuild if you can find the parts. Otherwise, send in the cores, or have your local airplane engine shop do it.

3) Comments on TBO, reliability, parts availability and weight for these?
>The Eisemanns I had in my Ercoupe worked for me. Champion/Slick has been around a long time and most mechanics are familiar with them.

4) Any good web articles on these issues?
>Google it by brand and see.

5) What are the recommended shielded harnesses for these?
>Check the usual suppliers = Aircraft Spruce, Wag Aero, et al.

Re: C85-12F magnetos

Case and Eisemann mags have flanges integral to the mag housing to mate to the C85-12F accessory case. Slick 4201Rs have no flanges: can anyone post a photo of their Slick installation of a C75, C85, C90 or O-200?

Slicks use small clamps under the nuts to hold that skinny flange against the accessory case. Goes in same hole as other mags. See the little square silver things here:

Sorry, I couldn't get the next pic shrunk. Scroll sideways to see the mag clamps.

New style clamp on the left:
