Shop rates?

What is a reasonable cost to clean, inspect, and hone a cylinder for return to service assuming no new parts, welding, or machining?

I just had that done to four A65 jugs and got a bill for 15 hours at $89 per hour ($1335). I thought the guy implied that the cost would be about $500 total if the cylinders didn't need repairs. Did I get taken for a ride or is that a fair price?

Re: Shop rates?

In order to do a proper job they have to disassembled stripped in a Turco tank, bead blasted, Zyglo, steel parts Magnifluxed, dimensioned, honed, painted, reassembled with new rings and leak checked.

Not a bad price if that was done.

We the unwilling led by the unqualified have been doing the impossible now for so long with so little we now feel it's possible to do anything with nothing.

Thanks for the reply. No paint and no rings. I had just brought him the cylinders already off the engine. But yeah, I guess if he did a good job on all the rest of the cleaning and inspection then its probably a fair price. I think I just misunderstood the original estimate. I did some more research and now believe $300 per cylinder is the going "mail away" rate.
