Re: BMW R1200 motorcycle engine

Here is PDF about TakeOff BMW engine http://www.geocities.com/redrive_psru/take-off.pdf unfortunately it's a little bit old, almost 9years old. Is that company still in business? It seems that it should be rather use for the land vehicles.
Quote:
The BMW engine 1100 with the TAKE OFF gear variant has been developed for land vehicles. This drive does not conform to the standard of aircraft industry. The drive is not tested or certified for the operation in aircrafts. After tests the manufacturer or experimental manufacturer of the air sports equipment has to decide on his own reponsibility, how far this drive concept can be used in air sports equipment (UL) with safe gliding flight characteristics, that can safely land in case of engine failure. BMW and TAKE OFF do not assume any liability for consequential damages that are caused by a drive breakdown of an aircraft or air sports equipment.
But this type of agreemenet is probably standard, they just don't want to have any problems if something goes wrong.

BMW doesn't want to support either. Take-off is still in business (first link)

Re: BMW R1200 motorcycle engine

Wow, that Isatis is a nice looking airplane. 140mph cruise is nice too. I would think the weight penalty in twin booms to make it a pusher would be worth it to remove the 'armrest' and open up that cabin.

/sorry about the threadjack

G'day Bill. Your best bet would be to get hold of Neil Hintz (he's got a place just outside Hamilton). He can make just about anything to do with engines and/or gearboxes.

Hi,
Sorry Bill - I didn't read your post properly. To answer your basic question: 1st, the C-type Rotax gearbox is what the Europeans use. I think that is because it has built-in dampers. 3:1 ratio is what the Euro guys use, so that's on the money. And yes, you will require a bellhousing.

Cheers,
Duncan

Re: BMW R1200 motorcycle engine

Have a look at this R1200, this bloke seems to have overcomed the electronic engine managment of the R 1200, he finally got flying permit, will be interesting to see actual flying test results for this engine

Re: BMW R1200 motorcycle engine

Is anyone monitoring this thread any more?

I'm not getting a responce from Take-Off.
Air trikes in Canada answers right away.

Has anyone used airtrikes redrive on a BMW?

How are the R1200 conversions going?

What ECU is being used.
I need to start my conversion right away.

Any one? Anyone??? is this thing turned on?

The BMW R1200 on the other hand, can be used AS IS directly from a bike. Even a very low milage bike is pretty cheap. Add on about $1500 for a redrive and bolt in onto the plane. That's it.

Here are some pictures of the complete engine, including redrive ready to bolt into an airframe. Check out the last pic. How neat/clean is THAT...

Duncan

quite interesting!

Re: BMW R1200 motorcycle engine

Hi everybody.
I would like to use gearbox from Hirth (with centrifugual clutch) and adapter plate from Takeoff. I added rubber clutch and some little adapters. Engine was run with original BMS-K and EFI
My R 1200gs will be installed at Skyranger.

Best regards
Bogdan (Ukraine)
