Hi!

Just a simple question.

Let say that I would like to replace an aluminum tube tail boom of homebuilt sailplane, with the same outer diameter custom built carbon tube.

The original aluminum tube data:
5,00"dia x 0.049wall, 6061-T6 Alum.tube, 10ft long.

What type of carbon fabric, number and direction of layers and resin will resulted in composite tube, with same outer dia, and same (or better) strength and stiffnes (bending and torsion), yet still lighter than alum. original ? What weight savings could be expected?

How should one do the math?

Any hint, tip, suggestion?

Mitja
