Hollow vs. Solid Box Spar

I've been considering making a hollow box spar made up from 1/2" thick foam wrapped in glass then glued together. This should result in a stiffer and perhaps stronger spar than if I just used solid foam with fiberglass caps and web. Does this sound like a good idea?
