I just finished reading a great article in Kitplanes Magazine, April, 2009, Page 62, titled "Addressing the forces associated with turns". Because I'm not a subscriber I can't copy and paste the story here for you. But in the article it spoke of how easy it is to quickly lose altitude while maneuvering in a turn, while not looking forward, particularly while low and slow and in the pattern or otherwise while the pilot is distracted from the task of flying the airplane.
Being kind of a nut about safety, I got to thinking about why we can’t we have an audible warning of altitude loss. It would seem such a device would be easy to fabricate, based on the how a VSI gauge works, but instead of actuating a needle, it would actuate a switch at an adjustable set point corresponding to a selected rate of descent.
I suppose that this already exists somewhere. Does anybody know about such a device?
