From EAA News:

October 30, 2008 — Len Johnson, president and CEO of THH Inc. and founder of LookLocal, set out to complete a transcontinental flight in a biofuel-powered homebuilt aircraft Tuesday morning, October 28. The 2,700-mile flight will span from Chino, California, to the historic First Flight Airport in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.

“My goal with this flight is to show people there are practical substitutes to leaded fuel,” said Johnson, EAA 660805. “We aim to provide a call to action and encourage our country to develop practical home-based energy alternatives.”

The transcontinental flight is the first initiative in the “Get The Lead Out” campaign, an undertaking by LookLocal to help spread fuel alternative awareness by promoting the replacement of 100 octane low lead (100LL) with a green, unleaded alternative within the next 10 years. Johnson is making the flight in his homebuilt Cozy MKIV, which has been specially modified to run on biobutanol, an unleaded fuel that can be blended with or replace most motor fuel, whether gasoline or diesel.

“We’ve had many generous sponsors who donated parts to help modify the Cozy to run on biobutanol,” Johnson said. “Their support has helped us overcome many mechanical obstacles.”

Johnson plans to make three refueling stops, with his first stop in Amarillo, Texas, already completed. From there, he plans to make a pit stop in Fort Smith, Arkansas, and Memphis, Tennessee, before arriving at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. You can follow Len Johnson’s transcontinental flight via SPOT satellite. (Click here to read Johnson’s flight blog.)

LookLocal is the property of THH Inc., a privately held California corporation created by Johnson. Its goal is to find local solutions to global problems by supplying raw materials for the petrochemical and chlor-alkai companies doing business in America.
